5 Home Electricity Safety Tips

Electrical

It’s the last place you would ever expect to be in mortal danger. It’s likely the largest investment of your time and money, and it’s the place you raise your family. That’s right: it’s your home. The electrical system of your home enables you to enjoy all the comforts of modern living. But to stay safe while working with your home’s electricity, safety should be a top priority. Here are five tips to keep in mind to prevent danger to your health and home while enjoying your home’s power.

1. Watch for Overloaded Outlets

Besides directly exposed wires, overloaded outlets are the main reason for home fires. Simply put, an overloaded outlet is one with way too many cords plugged into it. If you have an extension cord in an extension cord, for instance, you may have an overloaded outlet. Use different outlets around your home to plug in devices and appliances, even if it is inconvenient to do so. You will be very glad you did.

2. Pull Your Cords from the Wall Properly

It may sound like a cliché by now, but there is a reason all of your appliance manuals say not to yank the power cord out of the wall when moving it. Not only does this damage the cord itself, but it can damage the internals of the outlet. This can eventually lead to a broken outlet at best and an electrical fire at worst.

Speaking of instruction manuals…

3. Always Read the Instructions

Not reading instruction manuals tends to make simple processes time-consuming and a bit dangerous. Whenever you are installing an appliance for the first time, always follow the instructions that come with the device to the letter. Some appliances require assembly, for instance, and the last thing you want to “assemble” is a metal part attached to live electricity. From computers to refrigerators, always read and follow the instructions.

4. Replace Damaged Wires Quickly

Exposed wires are the number one cause of home fires. This can be true of wires that are only used once in a while (like vacuum cords) or even appliance cords that are permanently plugged in (like a freezer). If you see damaged wires or even worn-out cords, consider getting them replaced as soon as possible.

5. Keep Kids Away from Cords and Appliances

Although the concept of power cords seems straightforward to you, kids need to be taught the very basics of home electricity. Demonstrate to them how to plug and unplug a cord appropriately, and never let kids play with the power cords of large appliances. Naturally, you’re going to teach your child never to stick paper clips into power outlets. But depending on their age, impress on them the importance of electrical safety. It will stick with them their whole lives.
